Residence Hall Student Conduct Process
The Process followed within the residence halls is as follows:
- If a hall staff member and/or other Duke employee witnesses a violation, he or she will speak with the student and document the incident using an Incident Report. Student residents are encouraged to report violations as well.
- Incident Reports are forwarded to the applicable Residence Coordinator (or other RLHS official), who will review the report(s) and make a determination about who will resolve the case. This may be the Residence Coordinator or it may be the Dean of Students Office, depending on the circumstances. Any violation that may result in a sanction of university disciplinary probation or greater is referred to the Dean of Students Office. Otherwise, most violations occurring in or around residence halls or apartments will be resolved by RLHS. Note that students who repeatedly violate university policies may be referred directly to the Dean of Students Office.
- If the Residence Coordinator is resolving the case, s/he will schedule a Conduct Meeting with the student(s) in order to: Understand the situation more fully; Provide the student(s) an opportunity to share information relevant to the matter at hand; and Reach a conclusion about possible responsibility for a violation based on clear and convincing evidence available at the time.
- If the student is found responsible for a violation, the
Residence Coordinator will issue a sanction(s) and document the
resolution of the case.
