Jarvis Residence Hall

Jarvis is home to approximately 90 first-year students on Duke's East Campus. Opened in 1914 the building was named after Thomas J. Jarvis, Governor of North Carolina from 1879-1885. Like all other halls on campus, Jarvis is co-ed. Jarvis is also home to a staff of one Graduate Resident and four Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones.  Jennah's office is located in room 111, so please stop by to say hello!

Jarvis is one of the two buildings on East Campus that doesn't have a Faculty-in-Residence, but students are often invited to participate with Faculty-in-Residence programs from surrounding buildings.  However, Jarvis residents do have experienced and enthusisatic RAs that put on programs like Duke Conversations and Ice Cream progressives that are both academic and social in nature!

Students living in Jarvis enjoy the convenience of a kitchen, laundry room, commons space, and study rooms.  It was newly painted in summer 2008 and got breand new commons furniture in February 2009.   Jarvis is situated on the main quad of East Campus, so it is close to the bus stop, the entrance of campus, and has a nice surrounding grassy area to study or play sports with friends. The rooms in Jarvis vary in size and shape, but each student has the same furniture: 1 desk, 1 desk chair (2-position style), 1 bookshelf, 1 chest of drawers, 1 metal bed frame, 1 36" x 80" mattress, and a mattress cover.  Some items that past Jarvis residents have brought include: an area rug for the hardwood floors, a fan because there is no airconditioning, hangers, a shower caddy, shower shoes, alarm clock, and a surge protector.  We suggest you talk to your roommate to see if you want to share items like a television, DVD player, microwave, small refrigerator, or game systems.

Jarvis is part of the East 2 Neighborhood along with Aycock, Epworth, Giles, and Wilson residence halls.

For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones at jennah.jones@duke.edu.

Although the rooms in Jarvis vary in size and layout, this is a typical double.

This is a picutre of the Jarvis Commons room during the year.  The tall wooden cabinet no longer exists because the house council purchased a large screen TV last year!
