GILBERT-ADDOMS
Gilbert-Addoms residence hall is home to approximately 190 First Year students on Duke's East Campus. Opening in 1957, the building was named in honor of Katherine Everett Gilbert, Professor and first chair of the Department of Aesthetics, Art, and Music and for Ruth Margery Addoms, Professor of Botany.
Like all other halls on campus, Gilbert-Addoms is co-ed, with male and female students living on the same floor. The majority of rooms within Gilbert-Addoms are double occupancy; however, there are a few single rooms too. Each room comes with a bed and desk, along with built-in dressers and closet space for each roommate. The large commons rooms on the first floor allows students a quiet space to study or a communal space to play pool or watch TV. Each floor also has its own common space for studying. Laundry facilities (high efficiency washers & dryers) are also located on each floor.
Gilbert-Addoms boasts some of the more fun and functional spaces on East Campus. The GA deck offers expansive space to spend a sunny afternoon sitting outside to talk with fellow residents. Gilbert-Addoms is also is home to the GA DownUnder, a large multi-functional area for residents from across East Campus. It is a great place to study, play pool, or attend Devils After Dark, a programming series every week on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.
When asked about why they enjoy living in Gilbert-Addoms, many students note that they have come to appreciate the large community it offers; “Someone is always doing something, and you always meet new people that you've never seen before.” Students also like that “the large number of people makes it easy to have a wide variety of friends in your classes and people that you have things in common with.” Another benefit of Gilbert-Addoms is that it is close to a satellite bus stop on East Campus. Overall, Gilbert-Addoms residents are confident that their home is the place to be!
The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. The Gilbert-Addoms Faculty-in-Residence is Michele Rasmussen, Associate Dean for Trinity College.
Gilbert-Addoms is staffed by one Graduate Resident and eight Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Mike Adams. Gilbert-Addoms is part of the East 3 Neighborhood along with Southgate.
