Brown Residence Hall

Brown residence hall is home to approximately 125 First Year students on Duke's East Campus. Opening in 1927, the building was named for Joseph G. Brown '75, a Raleigh banker. Brown was a trustee of Trinity College for 34 years and chairman of the trustees for 10 years. Like all other halls on campus, Brown is co-ed, with male and female students living on the same floor. Brown is staffed by one Graduate Resident and five Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Philip Duhart.

Brown is the primary home for the First Year Wellness Living Learning Comminuity. A wellness community is a group of people coming together with shared commitment to the pursuit of a holistic well-being. Programs for residents will focus on academic adjustment, nutrition, physical health, mental wellness, and personal expression.

Most of the rooms in Brown retain their original hardwood floors.  The unique architecture of the building means that very few rooms in Brown are the same shape or size.  The Brown House Council recently purchased a big screen TV for the main commons room and a piano was placed in Brown in 2007.  Brown also boasts a common area kitchen and several smaller study rooms.

The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. The Brown Faculty-in-Residence is Anthony M. Kelley, Assistant Professor of Music.

Some suggested items to bring for your room would include a small area rug, a fan, and a lamp. You may also want to bring an extra chair, but be sure to check with your roommate, so you both do not end up bringing two of everything!

For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Residence Coordinator Philip Duhart.
