Arriving on Campus

Move-In and Orientation

First-Year students are scheduled to move into their assigned residence hall on Tuesday, August 18, 2009. Move-in is scheduled during specific time periods by residence hall to help minimize traffic congestion. Your move-in time will be provided with your housing assignment notice and notification of your roommate (as applicable). Your move-in parking pass will be available on the site where you view your housing assignment information.

As is our tradition at Duke, all first-year students will move-in on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, and are expected to spend that evening in the residence halls. A mandatory house meeting is scheduled that evening for all students living in your residence hall. Parents and other visitors will be asked to leave the residence halls by 7:30 pm in order for students to participate in planned orientation and residence hall activities.

More info about Orientation is available on the New Student and Family Programs site.

What will be in my room?

All rooms are equipped with single beds with 36” x 80” innerspring mattresses. These mattresses require extra long sheets.

Room furnishings for each resident include a bed and mattress, chest of drawers, closet or wardrobe, mirror, study desk, bookcase or shelving, and desk chair. Additional furnishings may be added to the room by a resident, with the consent of all residents of that room. Residents are responsible for all furnishings provided in the room. University provided furniture may not be removed from the room. Any furniture missing from the room when the residents move out will result in a charge.

Personalizing Your Space

All linens, including sheets, pillows, pillowcases, bedspreads, blankets and towels, etc., must be supplied by the student. All rooms are equipped with window blinds. Drapery-type window coverings are permitted; however, the resident(s) of the room is responsible for any damage caused by instillation of window coverings.

Loft guidelines are available here. We strongly recommend that you delay purchasing a loft system until you arrive on campus.

Most residence halls are not carpeted. We suggest that you wait until you arrive before purchasing a carpet or rug. Unfortunately, room dimensions are not available. There are usually private vendors on campus during New Student Orientation selling carpets and rugs.

Electrical appliances such as lamps, clocks, computers, stereos, fans, hair dryers and similar items are permitted; however, many buildings are not wired to accommodate all the electrical equipment the residents might like to use at once. Please use discretion. Halogen lamps are not permitted.

Students may not bring individual air-conditioning units/window air-conditioning units. Cooking appliances, except self-contained coffee makers, are not advised. Any damage caused by their use will be the financial responsibility of the student. Duke practices energy conservation with student cooperation.

Small refrigerators (not to exceed 4.0 cu. ft.) and microwaves may be used in student rooms. Each room may have a maximum of one refrigerator and one microwave. If you wish to make arrangements to rent these items, you may contact collegeboxes at www.collegeboxes.com or 1-866-BOX.IT.UP.

Residential Services

Cleaning equipment is available for student use. Duke University does not clean individual bedrooms during the academic year. Students are expected to keep their rooms orderly and clean.

Laundry rooms with washers and dryers are available in the residence halls. These machines operate with coins and by use of Flex points on your DukeCard. A full-service laundry is operated on West Campus in the West Union.

Telephone and cable television services are available in all student rooms; however, you must furnish your own equipment. Arrangements for telephone and/or cable television services may be made after you arrive on campus.

Computer connections to DukeNet (the campus computer network) and to the internet are available in every student room. You will be receiving specific computer connection information from the Office of Information Technology. Computer labs for student use are available in several residence halls.

On-campus parking is limited. Parking permits must be purchased though Parking and Transportation Services. Please contact the parking office at (919) 684-7275 for additional information.

Mailing and Shipping Information

You will be mailed an East Campus Post Office Box assignment from the Duke Post Office. All mail delivered by the US Post Office should be addressed to this box number. Parcels shipped through other private vendors should be addressed directly to you at your assigned residence hall.

Duke University is unable to provide storage for luggage and other belongings before your arrival. We strongly recommend that you bring your belongings with you rather than ship them. If you must ship, you should make arrangements through a shipping company.

The university will not accept early shipments.
It is advisable to ship your baggage to arrive on or after Wednesday, August 19, 2009 so that you will be here to receive it. Some local companies may not begin deliveries until the first day of classes. You will need to be certain to bring necessary belongings with you. There is usually a limit on the size of a package that shipping companies will deliver. We encourage you to investigate possible limits with your local agent.
