Residential Options and Communities

Students will indicate housing preferences on the First-Year Online Housing Application.

  • Room size: First-year students are assigned to single, double, and triple rooms in the residence halls.
  • Single-gender or Co-ed: All residence halls on East Campus are co-ed. Several of our halls have single-gender floors.
  • The Focus Program: First-Year students may apply to participate in a Focus Program
  • Performing Arts Community: Students may indicate a preference to live in the Performing Arts Community
  • Wellness Living/Learning Community: Students may indicate a preference to live in the Wellness Living/Learning Community

First-year assignments are done on a random basis. Duke University is committed to encouraging our students to embrace new experiences, and our random process allows students to be exposed to a myriad of cultures, view-points, and value systems. While first-year students are offered the opportunity to indicate a preferred roommate, we encourage all of our students to participate in this random process for a truly educational and eye-opening experience!   We make every effort to meet the preferences (roommate, room type, medical needs, etc.) for students returning all required materials by the June 5, 2009 deadline, as demand permits. However, we cannot guarantee that a student’s preferences will be met.

Many of our students will choose to participate in The Focus Program or in one of our Living/Learning Communities. Participation in these programs will partially determine housing placement, as each program is housed in a specific building.
