Traditional Events for East Campus Residents

Midnight Breakfast

At the end of each semester, the East Campus Council works with Duke Dining Services to host a late night study break in the Marketplace.  Midnight Breakfast has become a campus tradition and students look forward to receiving the themed t-shirt in addition to the yummy late night meal!  Past themes have transported hungry students to Candyland, a Rock Concert, Sailing the Seas, and even a Boy Band event.

Hypnotist

Each fall, East Campus hosts the legendary hypnotist Tom DeLuca for a show geared just for the first year class!  Mr. DeLuca invites 20 - 25 students up to the stage.  It's an event that many students say is one of their favorite memories of their first year at Duke!

Ice Ball

The Ice Ball is a class formal dance that is held at an off-campus venue at the beginning of second semester.  Planned by East Campus Council, the Ice Ball sometimes takes the form of a masquerade ball or another theme.

Community Trick or Treat and Epworth Haunted House

As part of a way to engage with the larger Durham community, East Campus hosts an annual Community Trick or Treat event around Halloween.  Residents may opt to participate by handing out candy or hosting a social event in the commons room of their house for the children of faculty, staff, and our campus neighbors.  Traditionally, the residents of Epworth also turn our oldest building on East Campus into a haunted house to entertain their classmates!

Spring Carnival

A favorite spring event is the annual Spring Carnival planned by East Campus Council.  The Carnival takes different forms each year- sometimes it involves large inflatable games and a concert, other times it is a campus-wide cook-out and ice cream festival.  It is always a fun way to spend a warm spring day with your classmates.

Ski Trip

A new tradition for East Campus is the class Ski Trip.  In the late winter, students may sign up for a bus trip to the western part of the state to ski on some of North Carolina's best hills.

Bricks to Stone

Started in 2005, the Bricks to Stone Celebration is a ceremony commemorating the transition of the first year class to the larger Duke community.  Students receive a class pin issued by Duke faculty and staff and observe a speech given by their class president.  A favorite at the Celebration is the delicious cake, lemonade, and ice cream.  It's a great way to wrap up the year!
