Frequently Asked Questions about Summer Housing
Am I eligible for a two or three bedroom apartment?
If you are a Duke student working for Duke on payroll you are eligible for space in a two or three bedroom apartment. Please note that it is unlikely we will have any empty two or three bedroom apartments for roommate pairs or groups of four (3-bedroom). Undergraduate students are not eligible for townhouse apartments.
What type of apartments are a working student and Summer Session student eligible for if they want to be roommates?
These roommate pairs are eligible for a one bedroom or two bedroom suite.
In what order do you make assignments?
Current residents who apply on time and wish to continue in their apartment are assigned first with any preferred roommate they may have.
Students with an assigned apartment for the fall semester are assigned next with any preferred roommate they may have.
Student BLOCKS where all members have applied on time will be assigned according to the date of the last block member's application. Blocks will be placed in order of application and assigned when single preferred roommate pairs are assigned.
Single students and roommate pairs are assigned in the order of the date of application. Please note that single students will be placed in partially occupied apartments where at all possible.
What is a BLOCK for summer housing?
A BLOCK is four or more students, male or female. Only two restrictions apply. Roommate pairs must be the same gender, and only blocks where all participants have applied on time will be assigned consecutively. You still need to appoint a BLOCK leader and type in the preferred roommate section on the application that you are with a block and name your preferred roommate. Please name the block, as there will be more than one (example Duck Block, Smith Block, etc.).
Can I get an extension in my spring apartment?
You are eligible for an extension in your spring apartment if you meet one of the following criteria:
You applied for summer housing in same apartment,
You are a member of part of an approved group participating in graduation weekend,
You are an athlete participating in post-season play, or
Your roommate has been granted an extension for one of these reasons. There is an additional charge for the extension period.
Can I move in early?
We are unable to accommodate early move-in requests. We simply do not have time to prepare enough apartments for all of those who wish to move in early. If you have an academic need, are an athlete participating in approved team activities, or have circumstances you believe would warrant early move-in; summer please e-mail Stacy at housing@studentaffairs.duke.edu. Vacation or travel plans are not considered a valid need for early move-in.
Can I be assigned to my fall apartment?
Yes, you can be assigned to your fall apartment if you meet both of the following criteria:
You are continuously occupying the apartment through the end of summer into the fall semester, and
The spring resident vacates the apartment and there is enough time to clean and perform any necessary maintenance.
There is an additional charge for the time between the end of Summer Session and the beginning of fall housing. If your fall assignment changes you will be expected to vacate the summer apartment at the end of the Summer Session Term II. If your new central campus assignment is available we will try to move you there but this cannot be guaranteed.
If I currently live at Central Campus can I move to my fall apartment at the beginning of Summer Session?
If your Fall 2009 apartment is vacant and ready for occupancy, we will arrange for you to be assigned there for the summer, beginning May 12. In many cases, apartments are not ready for occupancy, so we appreciate your patience and understanding. If your fall apartment will be occupied by a current resident who is staying for the summer - in these cases you will be able to move once they have vacated.
Students who are not living on-campus for the entire summer will remain assigned to their Spring apartment. If you are coming in just for the end of the summer (such as Summer II) we will try to assign you to your Fall apartment, if it is available.
Why didn't I get the type of apartment I wanted?
One reason for not getting a specific apartment type is eligibility. If you are eligible for a certain apartment type and you did not get it there may be several reasons why. The most likely reason will be there simply is no space in the type of apartment you requested.
Why didn't I get my preferred roommate?
We honor all mutual roommate requests but there does come a point when we do not have any empty apartments to place roommate pairs in. We must then split pairs and find each roommate someone compatible.
How can I switch roommates with someone else?
If two students wish to room together and all of the involved parties agree, a roommate swap is possible. The two people moving will need to send an e-mail requesting this switch. These two students will need to come to the housing assignments office together and adjust their paper work before going to the Central Campus Service Office and officially exchanging keys.
Can I have an apartment to myself?
No. We simply do not have enough apartments to house students individually.
Can I store friend's belongings in my apartment over the summer?
Only if the items being stored can fit within your private bedroom space. Shared areas of the apartment (kitchen, bathroom, living room, dining room) should not be used for storage over the summer.
Can I stay in the apartment until the residence halls open for the fall semester?
No, Central Campus Apartments are occupied during the fall. The residents who will be returning to Central Campus have the same right to expect their fall assignments to be ready as you do. During the time Central Campus is closed after Summer Session we must clean and maintain the apartments for the fall residents.
Where am I supposed to stay when Central Campus closes for summer housing?
Holdover housing is available for students who have Fall 2009 on-campus assignments. Please look for more information about Holdover Housing on our website during the summer.
