Leaving University Housing and Retention of Eligibility

A student who plans to live outside of University housing for any of the following reasons and who plans to return to University housing at a later date may retain residential status when:

  1. participating in a Duke-approved or Duke-sponsored study away program
  2. taking an approved leave of absence for academic study away or for financial, medical, or personal reasons
  3. participating in an approved internship (with a Dean's recommendation for housing upon return)
  4. moving to off-campus housing (completed residency requirement only)

Status Upon Return

Students not residing in University housing for the reasons stated above will receive housing upon their return having the same priority as if they had continued in University housing. Semesters on leave of absence do not count towards the three-year housing requirement and a student's housing status may be adjusted to reflec their time on leave.  Students should contact the Housing Accommodations Office (housing@studentaffairs.duke.edu) to make arrangements for their return to campus housing.
