How do I request a housing (re)assignment?
Housing assignments are frozen until early September. Our office uses this time to verify assignments and late attrition. If you would like to pursue reassignment, please begin with Step 1 (below). Requests will be processed beginning September 7, 2009.
Step 1: Talk to your Residence Coordinator or their designate.
Your RC is a professional member of Duke’s Residence Life team. S/He will discuss your situation with you and apprise you of your options. In some cases, s/he will recommend that you take some additional steps before seeking reassignment. We ask that you comply with this recommendation, because there are very few spaces available to accommodate reassignment requests, so it may be a while before your request can be honored. Central Campus residents will work through the office of the Assistant Dean for Central Campus and will meet with the Graduate Resident for Central Campus.
Step 2: Submit your request.
If, after discussing your situation with the appropriate member of the Residence Life staff, it is agreed that you should proceed with applying for reassignment, please submit a reassignment request form. You may want to visit our Roommate Finder site, as well. Students who use the Roommate Finder increase the likelihood that their reassignment preferences will be met.
Step 3: Be Patient.
Once HA receives your request and verification that you have spoken with Residence Life, we will add you to our waiting lists. While we certainly try to accommodate as many reassignment requests as possible, we are extremely limited in how many spaces are available on campus. Often we have numerous students looking to move to the same types of rooms, and we are not able to accommodate everyone. We ask that you be patient and make the best of your current situation. If we are able to accommodate your request, HA will inform you of your new assignment, and you will have two business days from when you are instructed to pick up your keys to complete your move into this space. We ask that you inform your current roommate(s) when you are moving so that they may have the opportunity to request a new roommate. Good Luck!
