Transfer Student Housing
Congratulations on choosing Duke!
Duke believes that the residential experience is an important factor in the educational process. The Board of Trustees mandates that all undergradutes live on-campus for three-years. As an extension of this practice, transfer students are required to live on-campus for two years. Transfer students who come in as juniors may request to live on-campus for only one year. You will be integrated with other upperclass students into our residence halls on West Campus and our apartments on Central Campus.
Transfer students will apply for housing online. The housing application will be available beginning May 18, 2009 and is due by July 5, 2009. On this application you will be asked to submit your housing preferences, as well as respond to our lifestyle questions, which aid in roommate matching. We ask that students respond as honestly as possible to these questions - roommate matches are only as good as the information on which they are based! Transfer students may also utilize our roommate finder to find a roommate, if you wish.
Information about the different West Campus Quads and Central Campus apartments is available to help you list your housing preferences on your application. Some general guidelines to keep in mind:
- Sophomores are guaranteed housing on West Campus.
- Sophomores who wish to live on Central Campus may request to live in the Sophomores on Central living area, which is in 1-bedroom (2-person) apartments. For 09/10, this living option will be in 206 Alexander.
- Singles are reserved for juniors and seniors.
- All Central Campus apartments are multiple occupancy (most are 2-person, some are 4-person). Some options offer individual bedrooms.
- While most of West Campus is unaffiliated, some floors/buildings have Selective Living Groups in them. There is also a Substance Free area, a "block-free" area called East Meets West, and a Wellness Community. You may indicate a preference for these areas on your application. (Blocking is a process whereby unaffiliated students may select housing near each other during our Room Picks process. The block-free area is a pilot program for 09/10.)
We will attempt to honor your housing preferences as space permits. Housing assignment information will be emailed to Duke email accounts in early August.
Room and apartment rate information is available here. Please feel free to contact Housing Accommodations with any questions, and welcome to Duke!
