Do I need a unique id number to apply for housing?
No, you do not need to have your Duke Unique ID to apply for housing. If you do not know your Unique ID, enter "0000000."
What if I have a medical need that needs to be considered when making my assignment?
If you have a medical need you feel warrants special housing, please have your physician complete the medical need information with Student Health. The form needed is titled Special Housing Instructions and Release of Medical Information. More information on this process is available here.
Do I have to find my own roommate?
No, if you do not have a preferred roommate, we will assign a roommate to you. Please be sure to complete the lifestyle questions on the application - we use these to make roommate assignments.
What is the difference between the '1 bedroom efficiency' and the 'efficiency'?
1 bedroom efficiency apartments are 640 Square feet. The bedroom is separated from the living and dining area as well as the bathroom. They are located at 205 Oregon Avenue.
An Efficiency apartment is 530 Square Feet and the living and dining area are not separated from the bedroom. It is essentially a student apartment with no walls between rooms with the exception of bathroom and kitchen. They are located throughout Central Campus.
In what order are assignments made?
First priority is given to first time, new international students who apply before May 1, 2009. Domestic students or students who have lived in the United States before will be assigned after all academic year new international students who have applied by May 1st. We assign students on a first come, first served basis, using the above priorities.
What is included in the rent?
Each apartment is furnished (bed, sofa, dining table and chairs, desk) and includes water, electricity, and high speed internet.
What are the move-in and move-out dates for the academic year?
Move in is August 18, 2009 and move out is Monday, May 17, 2010 at noon.
Can I rent my assigned apartment during the summer?
Yes, you can request to rent your apartment through the summer. We do require an application for summer housing to be completed by the deadline in April. Information about summer housing will be online in late March.
What if I need to move in early?
If you have an academic need to move in early, please contact the Graduate Housing Coordinator. The GAC will identify your need and work with you to get you into on campus housing early.
Does the bus run close to my apartment?
Yes, campus buses stop at several points within Central Campus. Please review the bus schedule for more information.
Where can I park?
There is ample parking at Central Campus. You must purchase a parking permit. More information about parking for Graduate and Professional Students is available here.
What if I don’t like my roommate(s)?
In an effort to avoid difficult roommate situations, we ask that you first take the time to get to know your roommate through email correspondence. It is a good idea to discuss ground rules before you move-in together. If you have made an effort to get along with your roommate and things still aren't working out, you can request mediation for a specific problem. Contact Terry Lynch, the Assistant Dean for Central Campus, to discuss your situation. If you feel the need to meet in person you can make an appointment by calling 919-684-9918.
What if I want to cancel my license after I move in?
Once a housing license is signed, it is binding. Housing licenses will only be cancelled if you are no longer an active Duke student.
