Special Housing Request Procedures

RLHS works in conjunction with the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) and the Student Health Center (SHC) to ensure consistency in evaluating special housing accommodation requests.  The SDAO and the SHC review requests and share approved student needs with RLHS.  Students with approved needs will be offered high priority for placement in available space that meets their needs.

Students interested in pursuing special medical housing based on medical, psychological, or disability related conditions must submit documentation of the disability or condition from an appropriate health care provider. This person(s) must not have personal ties to the student or the student’s relatives.
  • Students who wish to request special housing due to a documented medical need should contact the Student Health Center (SHC). The student’s treating physician should complete the series of questions that are considered when evaluating special housing requests. Information can be found at the Medical Need Special Housing Request Instructions website. Students with questions should contact the SHC at the Healthy Devil website or (919) 681-9355.
  • Students who wish to request special housing due to a documented impairment and would like to be considered for reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, should contact the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO). The SDAO website contains procedures for students who request to be considered for reasonable accommodations, documentation guidelines and other information about the office. Students with questions should contact the SDAO website or at (919) 668-1267.
All students who request special housing due to a psychological impairment should submit full and current documentation to the SDAO.
If it is determined that you are eligible for special housing, RLHS will follow-up with you about assignment options. We will make every effort to find appropriate and reasonable placement as recommended.

Deadlines:

  • June 5, 2009 - Deadline for students in the Class of 2013 to submit special housing requests.  Late applications will be accepted, but there is no guarantee we will be able to take your approved need into account during the initial room assignment process.
  • October 5, 2009 - Deadline to submit a new need as part of the upperclass Spring Housing process.
  • February 5, 2010 - Deadline to submit a new need as part of Room Picks.

Students will be notified of the status of their request within four weeks after the deadline date. Requests submitted after the deadline will be considered late and may result in a processing delay. New and/or urgent conditions will be considered upon receipt.

Please note that if a student with an approved medical need (through Student Health) turns down the opportunity to live in a space that meets their approved need, their approval may be cancelled by RLHS.  The student may seek reapproval for the future through Student Health.
