Selective Living Group Housing Expectations

Each Selective Living Group (SLG) has the opportunity to control in-section room assignments. This arrangement is mutually beneficial to groups and to RLHS, and it functions well, as long as we all remember that we have responsibilities to each other!

Please carefully review the information in this site. Direct any questions or concerns to RLHS at housing@studentaffairs.duke.edu.

Responsibilities of RLHS to Selective Living Groups:

  • Keep liaisons informed of housing related matters. Email will be the primary form of communication.
  • Refer members’ assignments concerns back to the group/liaison.
  • Seek feedback from liaison regarding solutions to situations as they arise.
  • Provide assignment process information to liaisons in a timely manner.

Responsibilities of Selective Living Groups to RLHS:

  • To fill all allotted spaces during both the Fall and Spring semesters. In the event that spaces cannot be filled, to consolidate members so that available spaces are those best suited for unaffiliated students.
  • Section must be filled first with members (sophomores, then juniors, then seniors if space permits), then with friends of the house.  Group leadership must live in-section.
  • Provide name and updated contact information for a member who will act as liaison between the group and RLHS.

Responsibilities of Selective Living Groups Members:

  • All students joining a SLG are required to fulfill a two-year (four semester) in-section living requirement. Students who withdraw from membership before completing the two-year requirement will be afforded the lowest priority in the general room selection process.
  • As SLGs are required to fill their sections, members who are not living in-section are expected to move back to section, should space become available.
  • Members may be required to adjust housing assignments to accommodate unanticipated vacancies, changes in membership numbers, medical needs of other members, or other situations that effect group housing.
  • Inform liaison of changes in your housing status (such as plans to study away, take a leave of absence, etc.).
  • Complete the Selective Living Group Member Agreement Form

Responsibilities of SLG Housing Liaisons:

  • Act as primary contact and representative of the SLG in all housing assignments related matters. Please check your email regularly!
  • Communicate housing policies, procedures, announcements, etc. to SLG members.
  • Keep RLHS informed about issues from the group membership.
  • Work with membership to plan out housing assignments for each semester.
  • Work with membership to resolve assignments related issues as they occur.
  • Provide updated membership lists to RLHS upon request.
  • Respond to housing related concerns and inquiries from RLHS in a timely manner.
  • When appropriate, make recommendations to RLHS on preferred outcomes for situations.
  • Notify RLHS when your term is over and provide the name and contact information of you successor.
