Central Campus

Central Campus currently provides housing for 1,000 students. Of these spaces, approximately 850 are allocated to undergraduate (juniors and seniors, with majority being juniors). By current policy, no sophomores live on Central Campus. Graduate students are allocated 200 spaces on Central Campus and Swift Avenue Townhouses. These apartments include efficiency, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units and are fully furnished. Community laundry areas are provided within the complex. U.S. Mail is delivered to a central location for the residents on Central Campus. Parking is also available on the property and is managed by Parking and Transportation Services. Recreation and social facilities on Central Campus include:

  • Basketball courts
  • Tennis courts
  • Sand volleyball court
  • Swimming pool
  • Barbecue and picnic shelter
  • Barbecue grills in numerous locations
  • Devil's Den
  • Uncle Harry's convenience store

Housing accommodations are also provided to the Chaplain-in-Residence and Duke EMS. The central office for Residence Life and Housing Services (RLHS) is also located at 218 Alexander.

Central Campus Council 2009-2010

As representatives of Central Campus, Central Campus Council works towards building a sense of community on Central Campus through programming and addressing policy concerns on Central Campus.  CCC is a great leadership experience for anyone who is interested in getting involved here at Duke University.
If you have an interest in joining Central Campus Council, you can submit an interest form and the Central Campus Council president will respond to you.  The form will be active in August 2009.

Central Campus Council Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities and Requirements of the President:

  • The President shall have working knowledge of the Central Campus Council Articles and provisions.
  • The President shall confer with the Central Campus Council Advisor on all matters.
  • The executive powers of the Central Campus Council shall be entrusted to the President.
  • The President shall call all meetings of the Central Campus Council and preside at such meetings.
  • It is the responsibility of the President, in conjunction with the Advisor, to plan the agenda for each meeting and distribute it to Central Council members.

Responsibilities and Requirements of the Vice President
  • The House President shall serve as acting President in the event that the President is unable to carry out his or her duties.
  • The House President shall assist the President in completing his or her duties.
  • Communicate regularly with the Central Campus Council Representatives to Campus Council and the members at large.

Responsibilities and Requirements of Treasurer

  • The Treasurer shall prepare and present a clear and concise report of all financial transactions of the Council after any money is allocated or whenever deemed necessary by the President or council.
  • The Treasurer shall make the books, or any other financial information of the Central Campus Council available upon request of any member of the council or advisor.
  • The Treasurer shall allocate funds only with the consent of majority of the voting membership present at the announced meeting.
  • The treasurer shall prepare a financial report at the end of each academic semester.

Responsibilities and Requirements of Communications Chair
  • The Communications Chair shall keep accurate minutes of the meetings.
  • Communications Chair shall record attendance to Central Campus Council meetings
  • The aforesaid minutes shall be distributed electronically weekly and distributed to the Central Campus Council representatives.
  • The Communications Chair shall be in charge of advertising all Central Campus Council events with fliers/emails to CCA residents
  • The Communications Chair shall be responsible for creating a mass e-mail for all major events.
  • The Communications Chair shall be responsible for making sure all poster/advertisements are taken down after event occurs.

Responsibilities and Requirements of the Members at Large
  • Members at large should advocate for CCA residents; bring issues, concerns, and needs to the Central Campus Council Executive committee’s attention.
  • Assist in promoting and planning of Central Campus Council
  • Communicate regularly with the CCC President
  • Attend the weekly board meeting

Responsibilities and Requirements of Central Campus Council Representatives to Campus Council

  • Those elected to represent Central Campus to Campus Council shall promote Central Campus Council’s interests respectfully and as Central Campus residents would want to be represented campus-wide.  Representatives to Campus Council should communicate regularly with the Advisor and the President of Central Campus Council about the work of Campus Council.
