Substance Free
Student feedback reflects a growing interest in Substance Free housing. We will be offering a pilot program where Crowell Quad, Houses G and H will be designated Substance Free. This community is dinstinct from the Wellness on West community.
What does Substance Free mean?
- Residents will be expected to abstain from the use, possession, and/or distribution of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal substances within the physical community. This includes proper management of prescription medications.
- Residents are responsible for the behavior of their guests visiting the Substance Free area.
- Residents may use legal substances outside the community at their discretion. For example, a student who is of legal drinking age may have a drink at a restaurant, but should not return to the community while under the influence of that drink.
- Residents who violate the substance free agreement for the area may be subject to reassignment to an alternate location on-campus.
- Residents will sign a Substance Free agreement (.pdf).
What is the difference between Substance Free and the Wellness on West community?
| Wellness On West | Substance Free Area |
| Involves a focus on Wellness lifestyle choices beyond substance free, such as healthy eating habits, exercising and fitness, and healthy study habits. | Involves only the substance free lifestyle choice. |

This includes proper management of prescription medications. Residents are also responsible for the behavior of their guests visiting the Wellness Community. | The use of alcohol and other substances is not permitted within the community. Behavior that is disruptive to the community and is the result of the use of alcohol or other substances is not permitted. Residents are also responsible for the behavior of their guests visiting the community. |
| Residents are expected to participate in a minimum of 4 community events each semester to help them achieve a personal Wellness-related goal. One Mandatory community meeting is held each semester. |

Residents selected will participate in Room Picks on March 19. |
Where will the Substance Free area be located?
- We are allocating the upper floors of Crowell House G and all of Crowell House H for Substance Free. The final allocation of space will be determined by demand, as reflected by Room Picks applications.
How do I apply for the Substance Free area?
- You will indicate your interest in Substance Free on the online Room Picks application.
- If you check that you want Substance Free on the application, you will be prompted to enter your Unique ID as confirmation that you are committed to living in this area. You will be required to select a space in the Substance Free area if one is available when your lottery number comes up.
- If you are a rising junior or senior hoping to living in a single, you can apply to Substance Free alone.
- If you are planning to live in a double or triple, then you must indicate the appropriate number of roommates on your application.
- Blocks may request Substance Free. We recommend that block members candidly discuss their interest in this housing option prior to the application windows to assure that you all fill out your applications with the same preferences.
How will I know if I can select a room in Substance Free?
- Once applications are submitted, RLHS will complete the housing lottery. Students who are selected (based on the lottery) for Substance Free will be contacted and given instructions for their room selection session. Substance Free Room Picks are scheduled for March 19, 2009.
- Students who are not selected initially will be informed of their placement on the waiting list for Substance Free and will participate in general Room Picks (or one of the other new group options - see below).
What if I am interested in more than one of the new housing options?
- Students may indicate interest in none, one, two, or all of the new housing options.
- The processes will be run in the following order:
- Sophomores on Central
- Substance Free
- Block Free Zone/East Meets West
- General room selection
- Students will be invited to participate in these groups in this order. For example, a sophomore interested in Central and in East Meets West may have a good lottery number and be invited to Sophomores on Central picks. In this case, they would not have the chance to pick at East Meets West. If they have a poor lottery number, they may not make it into the Sophomores on Central community, but would then have a chance to select at East Meets West.
- If your first choice is one of the later processes, then your second choice cannot be one of the earlier processes. We know this might be confusing - come to an info session if you have questions!
