East Meets West, a.k.a. Block Free Zone
A new housing option on West Campus will offer separate living space for independent students who choose not to block. This living option is designed to address the concerns of independent students who, in some instances, occupy rooms isolated within groups of blocked students or Selective Living Groups. The level of demand expressed for this option will also have a positive impact for those students who are blocking.
Where will this area be located?
- The current plan utilizes Kilgo Houses I and J. Space in Few House FF is also being considered, depending on demand.
- You will indicate your interest on the online Room Picks application.
- If you check that you want this option on the application, you will be prompted to enter your Unique ID as confirmation that you are committed to living in this area. You will be required to select a room in East Meets West/Block Free Zone if there is a space available when your lottery number comes up.
- If you are trying for a single (rising juniors and seniors, only), you will enter this process on your own.
- If you are entering this process hoping to select a double or a triple, you must request the appropriate number of roommates on your application.
- Students who want to block are not eligible for this option.
How will I know if I can select space in East Meets West/Block Free Zone?
- Once applications are submitted, RLHS will complete the housing lottery. Students who are selected (based on the lottery) for this area will be contacted and given instructions for their room selection session. East Meets West/Block Free Zone Room Picks are scheduled for the evening of March 19, 2009.
- Students who are not selected initially will be informed of their placement on the waiting list for this area and will participate in general Room Picks (or one of the other new housing options, if requested - see below).
What if I am interested in more than one of the new housing options?
- Students may indicate interest in none, one, two, or all of the new housing options.
- The room picks processes will be run in the following order:
- Sophomores on Central
- Substance Free
- Block Free Zone/East Meets West
- General room selection
- Students will be invited to participate in these groups in this order. For example, a rising sophomore interested in Central and in East Meets West may have a good lottery number and be invited to Sophomores on Central picks. In this case, they would not have the chance to pick at East Meets West. If they have a poor lottery number, they may not make it into the Sophomores on Central community, but may then have a chance to select at East Meets West.
- If your first choice is one of the later processes, then your second choice cannot be one of the earlier processes. We know this might be confusing - come to an info session if you have questions!
