Performing Arts Living/Learning Community
The Performing Arts Living/Learning Community is a place for students with a shared interest in music, dramatic performance, and artistic expression. Our hope is that this Community will give students the opportunity to be an audience for performance events, to perform or display artwork for their peers, and to participate in performance-related community service activities.
Any incoming first year student may choose to live in the Performing Arts Living/Learning Community. Students do not need to be an art major, a music major, or drama major in order to live in the community, they just need to have an interest in the art, music, or performance.
Special Events and Experiences in the Performing Arts Community
- Regular Performance in the community: A cappella, improv, musical performance groups will be invited to the residence hall commons room to perform. In the past, we have enjoyed performances by the Ciompi Quartet and Nnenna Freelon, Hillary Hahn, Jacqui Carrasco and others. In past years, a 2-day "Let's Tango" Fest was held.
- Community Service: Residents can choose to be involved in community service projects. Some opportunities may include a performance at hospital, using artisitic techniques to make cards for someone, teaching dance lessons to a class at an elementary school.
- "Arts to Go" trip: Several times each semester, residents can sign for free tickets to area artist venues. Past trips have included the Monet Exhibit at the NC Museum of Arts, performances of Stomp! and Cats, as well as the NC ballet.
- Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill Area Outings: Students will be provided with information about events in the community and organize groups of people to participate in local festivals, performances, and venues.
- Student Opportunities: The Performing Arts LLC is a place for students to show off their own talents if they choose. Poetry, photography, painting, music, singing, etc are all on the menu!
