Wilson

Wilson was originally constructed and opened in 1927 as the Faculty Apartments for the Women's College. Currently configured in a suite style, the building was named in honor of Dean Mary Grace Wilson, the first dean of the Women's College at commencement in 1970. Wilson is currently home to approximately 100 first-year students on Duke's East Campus. Like all other halls on campus, Wilson is co-ed. It is also home to a staff of one Graduate Resident and four Resident Assistants‚ under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones.

The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. The Wilson Faculty-in-Residence is Associate Professor of the Practice of Russian, Carol Apollonio Flath, and her daughter Maggie. Professor Flath is known all over campus for her weekly Monday night cookie nights... be sure to stop by during the academic year for a yummy treat and great conversations!

Residents of Wilson enjoy two commons spaces with brand new furniture as of Fall 2008, a kitchen area, and a study. The student rooms vary in size and shape, but they are all part of a suite-style lay out. Thus smaller groups of students share a more private bathroom.  You may want to contact your roommate and suitemates to determine what storage bins you want to leave in the bathrooms. The only downside is that you have to keep the bathroom clean on your own!   Each student has similar furniture: 1 desk, 1 2-position desk chair, 1 chest of drawers, 1 bookshelf, 1 metal bedframe, 1 36" x 80" mattress, and a mattress cover.

Laundry facilities are located on the first floor. With no air conditioning and hardwood floors in Wilson, many students suggest bringing a fan and area rug with you.  Additional items you may want to bring include: an alarm clock, hangers, extra long twin sheets, surge protectors, and Ethernet cord.  When you talk to your roommate and suitemates about bathroom supplies, you may also want to discuss sharing items like a small refrigerator, microwave, television, DVD player, and game systems.

Wilson is situated in the center of the main quad of East Campus, so it's in close proximity to the Marketplace, Lilly Library, the bus stop, and has a ncie grassy area out front to study or play sports with friends.  Each year, the residents of Wilson challenge those in Giles during the annual flag football game, held on the quad, between the two buildings.  While Giles is the current trophy holder, Wilson has won in the past... and you never know what will happen this year!

Wilson is part of the East 2 Neighborhood along with Aycock, Epworth, Giles, and Jarvis residence halls.
