SOUTHGATE
Southgate residence hall is home to approximately 150 First Year students on Duke’s East Campus. Opening in 1921, the building was a gift from the citizens of Durham in memory of James H. Southgate, local businessman and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (notably at the time of the Bassett Affair).
Like all other halls on campus, Southgate is co-ed, with male residents on the second floor and female residents on the third. On the first floor are three large community parlors, laundry facilities (washers and dryers), a kitchen, along with a gymnasium that is available for student use. Southgate offers a variety of room arrangements—singles, doubles and triples. Each room comes furnished with a bed, desk and bureau for each resident. The closets are spacious and roomy, making it easy for roommates to share their space. Another great benefit of Southgate is its proximity to Whole Foods and the many wonderful restaurants on Ninth Street.
If you ask a Southgate resident what they enjoy about living in this house, they will likely share that the commons spaces are great; “I love how the first floor is just devoted to common space - it definitely gives Southgate a sense of community.” As another student expressed, “I enjoy walking into Southgate and smelling fresh baked goods or hearing someone playing the piano. It's always such a welcoming feeling!” While Southgate’s location is not as close to the main quad as other houses on East Campus, students come to appreciate all that it has to offer. As one resident articulates, “It may be the farthest dorm on East Campus, but you learn to love it. I wouldn't have wanted to live anywhere else!”
The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. The Southgate Faculty-in-Residence is Zbigniew Kabala, Associate Professor for Civil Engineering.
Southgate is staffed by one Graduate Resident and six Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Katie Yates. Southgate is part of the East 3 Neighborhood along with Gilbert-Addoms residence hall.
