Giles Residence Hall

Giles is home to approximately 115 first-year students on Duke's East Campus. Giles opened in 1927 and is named after three sisters (Theresa, Mary and Persis) who were the first female graduates of Trinity College (Duke's predecessor). The sisters graduated from Trinity in 1878. Each floor in Giles is coed with separate bathrooms for male and female residents. It is also home to one Graduate Resident and five Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones.

The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. Giles welcomes a new Faculty-in-Residence this year, Dr. Katherine Ewing from the Cultural Anthropology department.  We look forward to getting to know Dr. Ewing with you!!!

Residents of Giles enjoy access to a kitchen area, a spacious common room, and a study room located on the third floor. Laundry facilities are located on the second floor. Giles is situated in the center of the main quad of East Campus, so it is in close proximity to the Marketplace, Lilly Library, the bus stop, and has a nice grassy area in front to study or play sports with friends.

Each of the rooms in Giles vary in size and shape, but they do have a window (no airconditioning) and hardwood floors.   Some of the rooms on the third floor have slanted ceilings (as seen below), however, they create a fun atmosphere for the room and your Resident Assistant can help you arrange your furniture to maximize space!  Each student shares similar furniture: 1 2-part configuration desk, 1 desk chair (2-position style), 1 bookshelf, 1 chest of drawers, 1 low-loft wooden bedframe, 1 36" x 80" mattress, and 1 mattress cover.   As a "layout" note, the chest and bookcase are sized to fit under the bed when it is raised to ~36".  Furthermore, after move-in, Giles residenst may request to raise the bed to as much as 5' by gong to the East Campus Residence Life and Housing Services Office.

Giles residents prefer to bring a fan, area rug, plastic storage bins (for under the lofted beds), extra-long twin sheets, a shower caddy, shower shoes, Ethernet cord, hangers, and a surge protector.  We suggest you talk to your roommates ahead of time, as you may want to share a television, microwave, small refrigerator, DVD player, and game systems.

Giles is part of the East 2 Neighborhood along with Aycock, Epworth, Jarvis, and Wilson residence halls.  The RA team enjoys planning activites for residents with other buildings in the neighborhood.  For example, Giles and Wilson have an annual flag football game.  Giles is the current trophy holder, and has been for two years straight!

This is a 3rd floor double room in Giles.  Notice the shape of the wall is slightly different due to the shape of the roof.

Although the Giles rooms vary in size and layout, this is a typical double.
