epworthbalcony

Epworth has two balconies which students can access as a great place to hang out and relax.

First opened in 1894 as the Inn, it's name was changed by Trinity College trustees in 1896 to Epworth using the name of the parish where John Wesley's father was minister in England. The oldest and smallest residence hall on Duke's East Campus, Epworth is home to only fifty residents. Like all other halls on campus, Epworth is co-ed, with male and female students living on the same floor. It is staffed by one Graduate Resident (shared with Aycock) and two Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones.

Epworth is part of the East 2 Neighborhood along with Aycock, Giles, Jarvis, and Wilson residence halls.

Epworth has a full kitchen, laundry room, commons space, study room, and even two outdoor patios. With only 50 residents it is common to see Epworth students heading to the Marketplace together, hanging out on the balcony. This year the students of Epworth will be able to enjoy newly painted walls and brand new commons room furniture!  The residents in Epworth quickly become like family and enjoy house cookouts or turning the residence hall into a haunted house for Halloween!

The rooms in Epworth vary in size, but each student will have similar furniture, including:  1 desk, 1 bookshelf, 1 2-position desk chair, 1 chest of drawers, 1 low-loft bedframe, 1 mattress (36" x 80"), and 1 mattress pad.  With the low loft beds, many students enjoy using plastic storage bins to put under their beds.  The chest and bookshelves will also fit under the bedframe when it is raised to ~36".  If Epworth residents want thier beds raised to a maximum of 5', they should visit the East Campus Resdience Life and Housing Services Office after move-in day.  Additionally, the rooms also have hardwood floors and windows, so it might be a good idea to pack an area rug and a fan.  Some additional items you may consider are:  alarm clock, shower caddy, shower shoes, bedding, flashlight, surge protector, Ethernet cord, hangers, and other every-day items.  You might also want to talk with your roommate ahead of time if you want additional items so that you may share.  Most roommate pairs prefer to share: television sets, DVD players, game systems, refrigerators, and microwaves.

The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom. The Epworth Faculty-in-Residence is Brenda Neece, Curator of Duke University Musical Instrument Collections and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music.

For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones at jennah.jones@duke.edu.

This is a picture of Epworth when it used to be the Epworth Inn. It has changed over the years, but still has great character. Students love that it looks like a real house!
