Aycock residence hall is home to approximately 90 First Year students on Duke’s East Campus. Opening in 1914, the building was named for Charles B. Aycock, Governor of North Carolina from 1900 through 1904. Like all other halls on campus, Aycock is co-ed, with male and female students living on the same floor. Aycock is staffed by one Graduate Resident and four Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones.  Aycock is part of the East 2 Neighborhood along with the neighboring buildings of Epworth, Jarvis, Giles, and Wilson.

Students living in Aycock can enjoy the convenience of a kitchen, laundry room, commons space, and study rooms.  Aycock was newly painted in summer 2008 and received new commons furniture as of February 2009.  Aycock is situated on the main quad of East Campus, so it is close to the bus stop, the entrance of campus, and has a nice grassy area to study or play sports with friends. Students also like to hang out in the commons room (seen below), study rooms, or even the ping pong room that is connected to the commons rooms. Aycock is also surrounded by a lot of green space where the house council holds bar-b-ques and sports competitions with Epworth house.  For the past two years the residence life team instituted the popular "midnight bbq" right before finals for students to come out and take a study break while snacking on s'mores and hot dogs!

The student rooms in Aycock vary in size and shape. Residents of Aycock usually brag about thier large closets, so check yours out before buying extra storage materials. Aycock is not air conditioned, but each room has at least one window.  A fan would be a great item to bring! The rooms also have hardwood floors, so many students prefer to use an area rug.  While the size and shape varies, each student has the same furniture in each room:  1 desk, 1 bookshelf, 1 desk chair (2-position, cushioned style), 1 chest of drawers, 1 bed frame, 1 mattress (36" x 80" innerspring mattress), and 1 mattress cover.

Some additional items that may be good for you to bring are:  alarm clock, shower caddy, shower shoes, towels, bedding, flashlight, surge protector, Ethernet cord, hangers, and other day to day items.   You may want to bring a small refrigerator, microwave, television, DVD player, or game systems. However, we suggest that if you live in a double you talk to your roommate first to see what they are bringing and what you coudl share!

For more information or if you have any questions, please contact Residence Coordinator Jennah Jones.
