The Focus Program
Focus students share the excitement of engaged, collaborative learning while being part of a close-knit social community.
Students participating in the Focus Program during their first semester at Duke will live in the same residence hall as their cluster; but, they will also share it with other first-year students. This gives everyone the opportunity to form a companionable academic and social community while encouraging friendships with all their first-year classmates.
This learning community allows for late night discussions that often explore how academic pursuits link to the world. Casual intellectual explorations and academic flights of fancy are all facilitated by the Focus Program's housing environment. When the workload becomes challenging, friends and scholars are at hand to understand and assist.
Students participating in the Focus Program during the spring semesters will not live with their cluster -- they will keep their assigned East Campus residence for the year.
Second-year students participating in the Focus Program during the spring semesters will not live with their cluster and will remain in their assigned West Campus residence for the year.
Like all students at Duke University, Focus students are supported and sustained so they can explore and excel. Intellectual curiosity flourishes in the safe learning environment of the Focus Program.
First -year Focus students should complete a housing request form that identifies specific housing preferences, including room-mate requests. Remember, if you are enrolled in the Focus Program during the fall semester, you will be housed in the residence hall designated for that particular Focus Program cluster. This may mean you will be housed in an air-conditioned building or non-air-conditioned building, even if those environments were not specifically requested. After the residence hall assignments have been determined, Residence Life and Housing Services will match Focus students with roommates.
The Focus Program does not have any input into the final room assignment of individual Focus students. Any questions on housing assignments should be directed to Residence Life and Housing Services.
