Spring Assignments FAQ
When will I be able to move into my Spring 2010 assignment?
- Students returning to Duke for the Spring 2010 semester will be able to check in on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 12pm. This is the earliest anyone will be allowed to check-in, so please plan accordingly.
- Students currently on-campus for Fall 2009 who are reassigned for Spring 2010 must vacate their Fall 2009 assignment no later than Monday, December 14, 2009 at 12pm. This may entail placing your belongings in storage over break.
My roommate is leaving for Spring 2010. What are my options?
Students with an anticipated vacancy in their room/apartment have the opportunity to name a new preferred roommate during the Spring 2010 assignments process in October. If you don't have a preferred roommate, we recommend utilizing the roommate finder. Requests must be mutual to be honored. If you do not name a new roommate, one will be assigned to you. You may also request to be reassigned as part of the Spring 2010 assignments process. Please note that space is limited, so the chances of being reassigned depend greatly on the type of space you are requesting.
What if I have a medical need for special housing?
Students with previously approved housing needs (approval received through Student health or Disabilities Services) should note their need on their application. We will do our best to meet approved medical needs, within the space available. If you do not have an approval for special housing considerations but feel you need one, please visit our medical needs information page. The deadline to submit paperwork to Student Health is October 5, 2009.Do I have to accept my assignment or reassignment?
- Reassignment: Students will only be moved if a space is available within their preferences. Therefore, yes, all reassignments are final. Once you have been reassigned, your space is available for another student in this process, and will not be available for you if you change your mind.
- Assignment: Yes - students requesting assignment are obligated to accept assignment and cannot later choose to live off-campus (even if they are eligible). If you have finished your residency requirement, be sure you want to live on-campus before submitting an assignment request!
Why didn't I get my preferred location or room size?
Available space for Spring depends largely on where people who are canceling are assigned. There is no way to control where space will be available. The best we can do is try to place returning students within their preferences. Sometimes it isn't possible to meet everyone's preference.
